Better Hydration for A Better Love Life

February 19, 2019

Another Valentine's has come and gone, but we all know that February is the month of LOVE. Per the usual traditions found in Western culture, Valentine's Day dictates that we exchange chocolate candies over a candlelit dinner while sipping on fine wine and listening to a few classic 80's hits (Yacht Rock anyone?). All of this is done, however, with the hopes that one thing may lead to another... after all, on average, we don't spend over $200.00 for nothing!

But since Valentine's Day has passed, the allure of the holiday falls away and we quickly slip back to our usual routines so often associated with Western culture, as well:

Work. Life. Family. Repeat.

This often means we neglect our basic needs which fundamentally fuels our natural and holistic self. But it is important, especially in this month of love, to love ourselves to love others! So, where am I going with this?

Well, DIVINIA is a water company and we would be remiss if we did not discuss hydration and sex, especially in February!

Believe it or not, not staying healthy and adequately hydrated can mean our love lives suffer. Sex is not a primary function; we don't need it to survive (though some people might disagree). As a secondary function, sex is often an indication of how healthy we are. The better off we are health wise the more our secondary functions, like sex, can flourish.

Now, what is the link between better hydration for better sex?

Reduced Stress

A 2011 study in the British Journal of Nutrition uncovered that mild dehydration impairs cognitive performance and mood in young men. The participants showed higher levels of anxiety and tension, even when at rest, why dehydrated even the slightest bit.

But the link is associated with both genders.

According to this WebMD article, water intake and stress levels may be correlated. By drinking enough good water and raising your hydration levels, you might be able to stave off stress. Stress is a natural reaction your body has when it is deprived something or needs aren't met.

Amanda Carlson, a registered dietician, told WebMD that "studies have shown that being just half a liter dehydrated can increase your cortisol levels. Cortisol is one of those stress hormones. Staying in a good hydrated status can keep your stress levels down/ When you don't give your body the fluids it needs, you are putting stress on it, and it's going to respond to that."

When you are hydrated, you are able to overcome stressors you might encounter during the day, reducing your potential to suffer from ailments like headaches.

Author Patricia Johnson, who co-wrote the book Partners in Passion: A guide to Great Sex, Emotional Intimacy and Long-term Love, says,"Often a headache is our body's signal that we're becoming dehydrated." Johnson suggests drinking a tall glass of water and waiting out the headache. "Chances are, your headache has vanished and you'll be able to focus on the pleasurable activities you're planning."

Better Blood Flow

With increased hydration comes better oxygen flow through our blood stream, aiding in the functions of all body parts, including sex organs.

According to Healthline, there is a substantiated link between dehydration and erectile dysfunction. Like every other part of the body, it is necessary to have oxygen to maintain natural functions of the body

When you drink water like DIVINIA, you are absorbing higher levels of bio-available oxygen and hydrogen (compared to deionized water), which can help keep blood vessel dilated facilitating easier blood flow. This is vitally important, because blood volumes impact sexual organ function. When hydration levels are depleted, the body responds by releasing a hormone called angiotensin, which restricts or constricts blood vessels. This prevents proper blood flow throughout the body, including organs like the heart, penis, vagina, etc., per a 2009 study conducted by French researcher Simon T. Thornton.

So How Much Should You Drink?
People are always curious as to how much they should drink. Although we know the 8-glasses- a-day rule, the best measure is to go by your thirst. Your body is an incredible intuitive machine, so listen to what it says and drink when you feel thirsty! If you need more or less, your body will tell you.

Now grab a bottle, drink some good water, and LOVE what your body can do!
